CSE 4633/6633 Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (Fall 2018) - Course Syllabus

Course description: Artificial intelligence (AI) is the subfield of computer science that studies how to design software that can perform tasks that ordinarily require human intelligence. It is a vast field of research, with many applications, and one of the fastest-growing areas of computer science. This course provides a basic introduction to AI research, techniques, and applications. Topics to be studied include machine learning; heuristic search; knowledge representation and inference, especially probabilistic inference; and planning and decision making. The course provides part of a general education in computer science as well as a foundation for more advanced study of AI.

Class Times and Location: Monday & Tuesday 2:00-3:15, Butler 103

Instructor: Eric Hansen

Grader: Zack Taylor

Textbook: Instead of a required textbook, there will be assigned readings throughout the semester.

Grading: Your grade for this class will depend on the following:

Prerequisites: CSE 2383 (Data Structures and Analysis of Algorithms) and CSE 2813 (Discrete Structures), both with a grade of "C" or better, and significant programming experience. Familiarity with formal logic, the basics of probability theory, and algorithmic concepts such as graph search and computational complexity is helpful.

Attendance: Students are expected to attend class regularly (including students auditing the course) and to arrive on time. Unexcused absences will negatively affect a student's grades. If a class is missed, the student is responsible for the material covered.

Add/drop policy: See the Mississippi State University Add/Drop Policy
